Applying textures to Ready FBX model in Unity Engine

Covers

Unity supports FBX files to open 3D models in the engine. If you find an FBX file that should contain mesh, material, skeleton, textures and animation. But some FBX files only contain skeleton and material but no textures. So don’t get too excited before looking at preview image and think that file will open as same as in unity engine as it looks. Just follow instructions to check files are essential to work on.

If you find an FPX model import that file into Unity and check for what it contains. To do it just grab your model and add to the scene. If your model is in white material that means there is no texture attached to material. In this point we understand we don’t have texture files coming in the file.

Go look at downloaded files to search for if there is a folder or file says texture. If you find some images files, open it. They look like messy map because it applies to 3d model. Textures files should be normal map, mask and so on.

If you look at your model in hierarchy it should contains some files but if you try to extract them you can’t because it is kinda locked it. But don’t worry since we want to apply our textures to our model we only need to have .mat file. To get that to Assets folder and find your model, then click it. In the inspector you’ll see sections that says Model, Rig, Animation and Materials. Then Click on Materials > Extract Materials. After select folder to save it.

Model properties in Inspector

I created “mat” folder to extract that in. Now if I click on .mat file. You’ll see there is no textures that attached on it.

This step is so simple. Because lots of model creators has already named our files to understand where we can apply texture. But if it is not. Here is the implicit explanation. If you see colorful map/texture that is probably main skin that should apply to Albedo section that is next to color picker. If you see white and black texture that is mask that you apply to detail mask section. And for more details there is normal map texture. It is being on the purple color. Mostly it isn’t selected as normal map. You can do it by clicking that map and select its Texture Type from Default to Normal Map then apply this Normal Map section too in material. That is it. Now you should see your model has good skin.

Hope you did it well!
