People worry about THC–the psychoactive component naturally occurring in the cannabis plant–can be fatal to dogs if consumed in large amounts, so it’s important to note that CBD products contain 0.3 percent or less of THC and are considered safe for canine consumption.

These products are usually derived from the hemp plant, as the CBD which occurs in this plant is much lower than that in cannabis. However, as even a trace amount of THC can build up in a dog’s system over time, pet owners should consult with their veterinarian before administering any CBD product to their dogs, and carefully monitor their pet for any adverse reaction.

How Much CBD Is Best for Dogs?

There are a number of factors that go into what constitutes a proper dose of CBD for your dog. These include:

As with any other medication, it’s important to follow your veterinarian’s advice and adhere to the manufacturer’s label instructions when administering a CBD product to your pet. A smaller pet will not require the same amount of CBD as a larger one, just as small children do not require the same amount of medication as an adult to achieve the same result. Consult with your veterinarian about the amount of CBD your dog should receive and start with a low dose. As with any natural treatment, the effects of CBD on your pet will probably take some time to become evident, so if you aren’t seeing any positive changes after a week or so, ask your veterinarian if you can gradually increase the amount and/or frequency.
