Poetry Picnics

Making Mother’s Day special in the midst of a pandemic.

The weekend before Mother’s Day, my family went on a little painting-at-the-park excursion, an experience which I wrote about in ‘Painting the Pandemic.’

Our artistic morning provided a safe — yet, much-needed — break from our quarantine routine, which has mostly comprised of overeating, Netflix bingeing, and not getting enough exercise.

My mother in particular enjoyed this little outing so much, that we knew we wanted to plan another creativity-in-nature expedition for Mother’s Day.

I quickly landed on the idea of a poetry picnic. We would take a blanket to a nearby park, find a patch of shade, and spend the morning recording our observations in the form of a haiku (all while donning masks, of course).

At its most basic level, a haiku is a form of poetry that follows a simple pattern of 5–7–5. The first line has five syllables, the second has seven syllables, and the final line also has five syllables. There are many more rules that this form adheres to, but for our purposes, we kept it simple.

On that glorious Sunday morning, there was so much to take in. The birds we chirping, the sunlight was streaming through the trees, there was even a gentle wind keeping us cool. I mean, come on, the poems were practically writing themselves.

We didn’t spend too long outside, but it was just what we needed — fresh air, creativity, and a sense of accomplishment.

Since we normally live in different states, I haven’t celebrated a Mother’s Day with my mom in about six years. So, it was actually thanks to the pandemic that my mom got exactly what she wanted for Mother’s Day — her whole family, together.

My haiku!
