The million dollar question

This is art. These are the words that are softly spoken in our minds after a certain type of experience. No one needs to tell us. There is no need for an academic or specialist to define it. We don’t have to understand the specifics of how it works. It’s a little bit like love when you think about it. It’s too big, too broad that we just embrace it, and recognize it.

It’s childish right? It’s just a blue ball that runs around killing robots. It ‘s no Monalisa at the Louvre. Until one day I kept thinking about the real impact this work had in me compared to the paintings in my parents’ living room, or most of the music I heard in my life. That’s when those 3 words were softly spoken. You know the ones I’m talking about.

Interactive digital art is powerful. The difference between paintings and videogame for me was that the latter invited me in constantly. Like Sonic asking me to run, I had to go further, deeper. To test, to experiment, to see the results of my actions. And it doesn’t need to be a multi-year-spanning AAA multi-million dollars franchise to feel like a valuable art experience.

Remember when I said that personal context matters? Big part of that is because this is truly when you recognise something as art or not.

So what if everyone else said some boring painting is art.

So what if what you experience was childish, or if it wasn’t hanging somewhere important.

So what if it wasn’t made of oil on canvas, but was made of voxels calculated on a screen.

If it has an impact — personal, social or cultural — we are the ones, individually or collectively, who get to point at something and elevate its status.

And this is our mission at Metiisto. We believe this is the moment we get to empower digital creators to be recognised for what they truly are. So, tell me.
