Stories from a 2nd Grade Classroom in BUDAPEST

Day 87 of being the 2nd Grade Main Classroom Teacher in Budapest, Hungary.

At this point I am numbed to the chaos of children… or so I thought.

It is recess and as usual I am trying to look around to make sure no one is in danger of seriously injuring themselves. There are are multiple 2nd grade classes out playing and one teacher- me- who only speaks English- I am out numbered.

I call Dorina over. Her English is great and she usually likes keeping me company — “Dorina what is going on over there — are Miri and Zsombi fighting again” “Greti, I am not sure-hmm maybe I shouldn’t say”.

Well, that is a yes.

I walk over I see Miri’s face is turning red- she has a little lizard which seemed to be the cause of the chaos.

Three steps away now and Zsombi gives me a look of pure scheme. He grabs Miri’s head- throws the lizard to the ground- makes her watch- as he swiftly smashed the lizards to its death.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.

What do you say to a 2nd grader- who barely speaks English- who knows fully that he just crushed Miri’s heart and her lizard. How do you make a 2nd grader learn empathy when clearly he likes watching people suffer.

I thought I had witnessed a lot in my 87 days of teaching but this, this was was a challenge I was not equip for.

Zsombi never learned his lesson. I was rendered completely useless at the actions of a 2nd grader. And I still had 93 days to go.

I will say it again and again as an ex-teacher who survived a measly year of teaching: TEACHER’S NEED A PAY RAISE!!
