How to 3D Print a Toy from your Computer

Bring your imagination to life through Shapeways

The Forest Creature

After my 6-yr old daughter began modifying her retro Littlest Pet Shop figurines with a low temperature glue gun, I purchased some bake clay so she could make her own creations. That’s when “The Forest Creature” was born.

Much to my daughter’s chagrin, her 3-yr old brother liked to throw her sculpture on the ground to watch it fly into pieces. We decided to turn her imaginative masterpiece into an indestructible toy through additive technologies, or 3D printing.

Shapeways

Shapeways will custom print your 3D files into high quality products, be it plastic, steel, or even silver.

1) First, I helped my daughter transform her design into a 3D file through Tinkercad.

Sculptris enables organic designs.

2) Second, I uploaded to Shapeways. The customer support representative who was assigned to me was patient and kind. After the design was accepted as “printable,” we were good to go.

3) Lastly, we chose our printing media, colors, and placed an order. Within a few weeks the figures arrived in the mail.

3D Bliss

My daughter was delighted when she opened the package from Shapeways. The green version is vibrant. As for the sandstone, we will adorn with acrylic paint. Both figurines are terrifically tough, as her little brother was unable to break them.

The best part about 3D printing a toy was that my child was able to convert her dreams into reality. Shapeways ensured success by delivering a custom solution to a burgeoning engineer.
