My May 2022 in Books

It was another month in which I only read three books. Part of the problem is that I’m up very early so when I try to read later in the day I fall asleep. The other part of the problem is that I am…

Deciding to become a freelance writer

Having been unemployed since August of 2017 and trying to find work that would have pay comparable to my last job, hours that would allow me to care for my children on the weeks I have them, and support myself and them AND allow me to pay the full alimony the dang judge hammered me with so I could get the ex off my back, but have been extremely unlucky in finding such a dream job.

Blogging

I’ve been researching about blogging, and have even started one. It’s on a subject that I love to talk about, but I don’t see myself being able to monetize it in any way. I don’t know if that’s why I don’t write many posts for it, or if it’s just that I’m too wrapped up in trying to make it perfect. I really want to believe it’s that second one, because I just don’t have much experience writing for the sake of writing.

Experience

I’ve done quite a lot of writing as a career Marine and a second career as a law enforcement officer. But it’s been all technical for the most part. How was the aircraft working incorrectly, what I did to make it work more correctly. As a law enforcement officer, it’s a procedure. Why was I there (since we have to have a reason to be in certain places). What was reported to me, how did I determine a crime took place, what questions were asked, who was the victim, the criminal, the witnesses. Most importantly, how did I develop probable cause to either make an arrest at the time, or apply for a warrant for the arrest of an individual that would pass the muster of a judge signing it to take away someones freedoms and put them in jail.

Free Writing

Having experience writing as described above, and loving doing it, but not having the balls to just sit my ass down and write freely, led me to research becoming a freelance writer. And of course, that has led me to sign up with some content mills, some freelance writing sites, etc. But of course you need samples to submit. All the research tells me so, even if somewhere in the article they say you can start this career path without relevant experience! And in all that research, I discovered this website, Medium. After reading a few free articles about writing, I discovered one of the main pieces of advice was to just sit down and freaking WRITE! Ergo, this article!

So that’s it. My shortened, Readers Digest condensed version of how I’m trying to make it in this new world of writing just for the actual pleasure of writing. Don’t get me wrong, I also want to get paid for it, and hopefully someday soon, since living on military retirement is not the way to get ahead or do anything fun with my children that I fought so hard to be able to keep in my life! But for now, I just wanted to actually do it, and PUBLISH it, and see what happens.

Thanks to anyone/everyone who reads this and hopefully doesn’t vomit on their device.

Crap, I just pushed publish and it tells me I should add an image. Great more research to do to figure that one out!

Edit: Figured the image thing out. Also, I feel pretty darn good having done this!
