How Much Should We Say on LinkedIn? 4 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Post

Recently I have noticed the line between personal and professional posts on LinkedIn becoming a bit blurry. A lot is going on in the world today and people feel inclined to talk about it. But how much should we say on LinkedIn? Some people feel personal opinions about non-work related topics should be relegated to other social media platforms, such as Facebook or Twitter. Others have a more “anything goes” approach and feel strongly that LinkedIn provides an opportunity to represent ourselves however we want to, regardless of topic. I think there is an argument to be made on both sides, though as a Human Resources professional I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to discussions in and around the workplace.

As humans, I think we can only compartmentalize our lives so much. Life outside of work affects us every day and some days it is difficult to check our home life at the door when we clock in. As a remote employee working from a home office, it’s near impossible for me. The image I shared with this article was created by PayScale and titled, “Bring Your Whole Self to Work.” It’s a great visual representation that we are so much more than our position in a company. We have interests outside the work place and fill roles in life other than the one we receive a paycheck for. Our value is not just in what we do, it’s in who we are. Does that mean we have to share our personal interests or opinions about politics or other topics on LinkedIn? No. Does that mean we shouldn’t? It’s a decision you will have to make for yourself.

4 questions to ask yourself when trying to decide if you should post something on LinkedIn are:

We all have things we feel strongly about and frankly, some things need to be said, but is LinkedIn the right place to say them?
