How to create desktop shortcut for Jupyter Notebook on Windows without installing Anaconda

Project Jupyter is a project and community whose goal is to “develop open-source software, open-standards, and services for interactive computing across dozens of programming languages”. It was spun off from IPython in 2014 by Fernando Pérez and Brian Granger. (Source: Wikipedia)

Now coming to the point on how you can make a simple shortcut to open and use Jupyter Notebook in your web browser on Windows system without installing Anaconda.

Anaconda is a distribution of the Python and R programming languages for scientific computing, that aims to simplify package management and deployment (Source: Wikipedia). It’s a little bit boring work to open Anaconda each time to start using Jupyter Notebook.

Here’s the way to do this using just two lines of command.

Note: It’s recommended to uninstall Anaconda so that all the Jupyter Notebook installation files from your computer will be erased and the upcoming steps will be going smoothly.

Before installing Jupyter Notebook make sure you have installed Python in your system and set it to the System environment variable. Now open Windows Powershell (Run as Administrator) and type…

Now create a Text Document and write the text bellow and save it as a jupyter.bat

Save the .txt file as jupyter.bat

Congratulation! Your batch file (.bat) has been created. Now simply run the file and yay! You can now use Jupyter Notebook every time just keep running this batch file.

Note: Keep running the batch file while using Jupyter Notebook. Your http://localhost:8889/tree for Jupyter Notebook will be stopped after closing the batch file (jupyter.bat).
