Why Product Management?

I recently read a blog by Product School. A guest blogger, Yogev Baron, was delightfully educating us on how to apply mentalization capabilities in product development. By using its two pillars, self-observation and empathy, we grasp our customer’s perspective but only by first understanding their beliefs. My training in anthropology allows me to say… YES! Absolutely.

Asking the right questions to uncover the truths of feelings and thoughts, of deeply set beliefs which aren’t always based in logic is the way to connect with customers at a deeper level, and that goes far beyond just understanding them. It lets you think like them and live in their world — and that’s exactly what anthropologists do.

I guess it’s not by accident I’m passionate about product management. Product managers dedicate serious time to discovering and internalizing the culture of the customer and applying those *feelings* to what and why they develop… and develop again.

I plan to do the same.
