Tasteless food

Louise woke up cold on the floor.

With little light in the room, she could barely see what was in the room. A little dizziness passed through her head making her close her eyes for a while before she was ready to see where she was.

She couldn’t remember what she was doing before waking up in this room. The dizziness became stronger now, so she remained lying a little more and trying to breathe slowly and tried to control her anxiety that was building up.

She also was so tired, it seemed like she was traveling for months without having a date to go back home. For how long was she knocked out?

She was so tired and thirsty, she started searching the room looking for a door, she found something looking like a door and went straight to it.The door opened and she started to search for some water and food. She then went to the other room and tried searching for a bathroom or a kitchen. First she found a bathroom and went straight to the water. She drank all the water that she could, strangely the water is cold like ice. Is she in a place that was or is snowing? She felt cold, but not like it was snowing outside.

She was trying to recall when was the last time that she ate or drank water, but she couldn’t recollect at all. She put in her mind to look for a bottle to store water, she did remember that she stayed almost 2 days without it. Another thing she noted was to search for food, she didn’t know how much time had passed since she last ate but her stomach was growling and making loud noises, looking like it was too many days without eating. Maybe that’s why she was feeling so weak and almost on the verge of passing out.

After that she went to a room that had a couch and fell asleep. She dreamt with home, with a comfort bed, with food made from her mom, with the sun on her skin. Everything seemed like paradise, she missed all of that so much. All of a sudden she was running and entering a door, feeling so much fear from someone that was following her on her way home. Somehow she thought that it didn’t have so many houses with many doors nearby her home and then she woke up.

The next day, she woke up in a totally different place. Again with this. She then remembered that this situation was replaying again and again. What was happening?

After a good sleep, she felt with more energy to start looking around and gathering stuff. She started to think of everything that she needed to survive: some water and food, some tools so she could protect herself, maybe some more clothes and lastly she needed to have notes of everything that was happening since she was forgetting a lot of stuff.

She needed to be smart and start to figure out what was happening, so she could understand and make a plan to go back home.

The place she was now seemed much like the last one but it was warmer and it had this bright light in the entire room. She was in a bedroom, like a children’s bedroom. The walls were violet and had some pictures drawn directly in the walls, the window was a medium size on the right side of the bed. She stood up and searched for something she could use. She saw some crayons on the floor and grabbed it. Near the wardrobe had a tiny desk with some papers, some had drawings of monsters and heros and a family and a few ones that were blank, she took the blank ones. Before leaving the room she looked outside the window and she saw the sun and some trees near the house, she couldn’t see any other houses nearby. So, she was all alone here?

She then went to the door and opened it. She was in a corridor, it was a little dark, since all the doors from the other rooms were closed. She went to the first door on her left and opened it.

It was dark in this room, the windows were closed. She could barely see, but had some idea what it was in the room through the light from the open door. When she was looking inside she thought she heard a screeching sound much like a scream, it was only for a few seconds so she thought it was her mind playing games. It had a bed, but this one wasn’t for a child, it seemed much more for an adult or a young adult.

She went to the other door and opened, two of them did not open, so she just let it be. The house seemed pretty much like a 2 children family house. She went through the rooms searching for things she could use, she found a backpack, where she put the crayons and the papers, found a rain jacket, some winter gloves and a pair of sneakers that fitted and might be of some use. She went to the kitchen and found some plastic bottles and some knives. But not food.

She filled the bottles with water and also tried to go outside of the house, but everything was locked tight. She tried to break a window, but it didn’t break.

This was different, she couldn’t get out. She didn’t have anything to eat. She stopped trying and went to one of the rooms and started to write everything that she remembered until now.

Last thing she remembered was getting sleepy, she then put everything on the backpack, and put it on her back, she then blacked out.

On the first day she didn’t realize the smell. It was faintly in the entire house, although it was mostly like something rotten it also had a sweet smell, like pancakes in the morning.

When she woke up, before even opening her eyes she already knew that she was gonna be in another place, a house probably, she just wished that this new place had food. She wanted it so much, it seemed like she was almost a whole week without eating.

Something was different from the other days. An odd smell reached her. She opened up her eyes and figured out she was at the same place. She didn’t remember waking up in the same place twice. She was still with her backpack and this odd smell was making her sick, it seemed like rotten food with some sugary smell. She checked where she was again, she was sure that she was in the same place. But everything seemed different.

She went out of the room, a string of fear passed through her, outside her room was messy. It had this thick black water in the walls and in some parts of the floor. It looked like black blood too or something liquid. The smell was coming from it. She walked through the house and this black water was all around. The rooms that were locked yesterday are all open now with the doors a little bit closed.

Again she thought she heard some noise. Now it seemed like a baby crying but in the distance, almost like someone putting a cushion on the baby’s head so you could stop hearing it.

She passed through them, she wanted to see it later. She saw a light in the direction of the kitchen and living room. But this place didn’t need lights, the sunlight was so strong, still she went closer and closer. She heard some music, but yesterday it didn’t have any music players or speakers. The music seemed like something from the 60’s. Something alarmed her and she started to walk more cautiously, she was walking closer and closer to the sounds and light and peeked from a corner. It seemed nobody was there, but she saw food on top of the table.

It was the exact same room as yesterday, but filled with food, everything looked like it was done a minute ago. But the smell was awful, everything smelled rotten, even though the appearance was ok. She went closer to the kitchen table, looked to both sides looking for someone or for something that could explain all of this. Nothing.

She then reached out for the food and looked very carefully. On the table there were apple pies, sandwiches, pot pies, salads, steak with carrots and mashed potatoes, some pasta on the other side, some chocolate muffins, some pastry that she didn’t know what it was made of, it had a lot of things. She caught one muffin and one sandwich and looked carefully. Everything looked okay and edible, but the smell was a little sugary and a little like rotten food. She thought for a while whether she would eat it or not. Maybe the smell was coming from that black water right at the other side of the house, but it was so strong that it was affecting the food?

What if the food was poisoned? She didn’t know how this food ended up here. What if someone put it here to test her? What if she is on some kind of experiment or a subject of some lunatic? Nowadays, there are some strange people doing crazy stuff all the time and some of them are on the news because they kidnapped and killed people, or just kidnapped or just tortured others.

She didn’t know what to think anymore, her stomach was aching for food. She could barely stand the view of all that food. She wanted to eat so much.

“What if I eat a little to test the food, to see if everything is edible? Just a small piece, and if it’s edible then I could eat it safely.” This was a good plan. And after eating she could investigate that black water over there, that seemed dangerous or toxic, seemed everything but safe.

She got a little piece of the muffin and ate it. The flavor was the best chocolate muffin she had eaten until today, it was so good. The flavor wasn’t bad at all, it seemed just normal food. She caught a little more of the food, and still the same. The muffin looked fine, she then reached out for the sandwich, it is a ham and cheese sandwich, a simple one. The first bite tasted like heaven, the second one too. She stopped eating for a little while, it was so strange, the awful smell didn’t go away but the food itself was all good.

She chose to finish eating her muffin and sandwich and wait a minute so she could see her body’s reaction. Until then, she went to the other room to see the black water. She entered a room that was locked yesterday, the room was a total mess. It looked like it had stains on some parts of the floor and walls, looking like blood but she wasn’t sure. The smelly black water was at other parts of the floor and at other parts of the ceiling, on the walls even on top of the furniture. It was taking the room, but doesn´t appear to have a start point from where it came to the house or a hole that starts to grow from. She took a book that was on the shelf and poked the black water.

The black water had this extremely soft surface, like a cushion, the surface doesn’t seem like water or blood, in fact it doesn’t even look like liquid at all, but somehow was shiny. Although it didn’t feel like water or blood, it ran on the surface just like it. When she poked it again it seemed to release an even more horrible smell. She continued to analyze it, to see if she could understand what this was and how she could manage to escape from here.

She then remembered that her body didn’t have any reaction to the food and thought of going back to eat. She got up and started to go straight to the door, but where was the door? She was sure it was behind her. She didn’t enter the room too much, so she could leave if something happened. Still, she only saw black water everywhere and no door. She looked anxiously, the rest of the room, the walls, closed windows and no door. Also, she started to hear high pitched moans, it looked like someone was breathing really heavily, almost like someone trying to catch some air. She started to walk around the room and try to go near the black water where it once had a door there. She looked carefully, examining inch by inch on the wall, looking for a sign on the wall that really had a door. When she found a tiny sign of the door, the black soft water had taken over the only way she could exit.

Fuck.

Louise after examining the wall saw that it was dropping from the ceiling directly to the ground, so almost none of the door was visible.

She grabbed another book. She wanted to try and see if she could open a hole on the black water so she could get out of there. She tried over and over, and it didn’t seem that the black water would give in, not the smallest opening was visible. Only more and more black water would appear, like it was multiplying or falling endlessly from the ceiling.

She looked around her and realized that nothing inside the room was visible anymore. Everything was taken over by this thing that looked like black water, but now that she was trapped by it, it really seemed like a living being. Even the little sounds that it made seemed like breathing to her now. These little sounds were much like air escaping from a closed plastic bag. Panic rushed through her brain and body, what if this thing was trying to eat her. She needs to get out of here. She remembered her backpack and that she had some knives with her. She took it and started to stab that thing, trying to make a passage so she could escape.

She tried so much and looked endlessly plus the lack of eating and the time spent on trying to escape made her tired. Her breathing was heavy and it started to feel like there wasn’t enough air in the room. Even though she stabbed it so much, it looked like the black water wouldn’t give in. More and more the space she had decreased to a little spot, mostly of the room already lost to the black water. She started to cry, trying to think of something to get her out.

Since the black water had taken over the windows, this room almost had no light. She started to feel that thing on her skin, closing on her, crawling all over her body. She couldn’t breathe, the touch of that thing was disgusting. She suddenly felt hot all over her body, mostly on the spots where the black water was touching her skin. It started to become more and more hot until the moment that she felt her skin burn. She tried to cut it with no success, it only continued to grow like before. She called and yelled for help, she knew she had little or no time until she couldn’t breathe anymore. In the last yell the black water reached her mouth and entered, she tried to fight against it. It was disgusting, just like a jellyfish burning all her tongue and mouth.

And then out of nowhere she just heard a laughter, a screechy one, the black water took her neck, the burning was unbearable by now. It tightened on her neck, she fought to try to get it out at the same time that she was gasping for air. But the thing was crawling all over her body, every inch of skin almost taken over, tightening up like it was preparing to eat her alive. She didn’t feel her legs anymore, one of her arms was becoming numb so fast she was sure that her entire limb was dissolving. The lower half of her body was so tight she thought that something was trying to cut her in half. The pain was unbearable. One last screeching laughter.

Everything went black again.

In the bedroom, Mel woke up. She was on the cold floor and didn’t know where she was.
