Crap. I quickly lean over to pick up the stack of papers I had just dropped onto the floor. I hear the door squeak open and listen to the distinct sound of my bosses voice. Shit. She can’t know I’m here. I was supposed to have these papers on her desk at 10am this morning. I look over at the clock which reads 11:30pm. I shift my weight and scoot around the desk. God I hope she doesn’t stay long. I cram my legs under the desk and pray that she doesn’t find me.

“Well how did this happen?” I hear her say. She’s on the phone. Whoever’s on the other end does not sound happy. “You know what? That’s not my problem!” She pauses to listen. “Fine! I don’t need your help. I’ll just figure it out myself.” I hear her angrily shut off her phone and let out a frustrated growl. I can feel the desk groan and assume that she sat down.

The door opens again and I hear an unfamiliar voice. “I just heard. I don’t understand how this got out!” It’s another female. She has a deep voice, but I can tell she’s a woman by the black strappy heels she has on. “How did this happen?” “Well, that’s what I would like to know” my boss responds. What is it? What happened? “Damn. I knew that girl would come back to haunt us. Just why now? You’re positive, absolutely positive that everyone knows.” My boss is using her serious voice, the one she uses only when she’s firing someone. “Well, only Cameron knows, but isn’t that the only person who matters?”

There’s a pause, and I hear one of them take a shaky breath. “No one else needs to know that you. There’s no reason for anyone to suspect it. It was an accident. Besides, everyone still thinks he left to do a study in Europe.” “But I killed him! Murder! Once he knows everyone else is bound to find out!” Killed him? She killed someone? Oh my god. I know exactly who she’s talking about. My heart speeds up. It takes all my willpower not to vomit. Who knows what she would do if she finds out I’m here?

“Do you know how he found out about my…situation?”

Another pause. “They found the body. I’m so sorry. I really am. They told me that if I didn’t cooperate they would put me in jail too. I couldn’t let that happen! I have kids! You know that!” The lady begins to sob as the door slams open.

“You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you.” I hear a struggle and then she gives up fighting. The cuffs snap onto her wrists and I hear her being escorted out of the room. The other lady is still sobbing, and suddenly I see a hand reach out under the desk. I take it and they pull me out.

“You knew I was here?” I ask shakily. “Yes, but we couldn’t pull you out in time. We weren’t expecting her to arrive so early. I’m just glad we were able to get her confession.” He puts his hand on my back and walks me out of the room. I feel the hot tears silently stream down my face as I look over and see the array of cops in the conference room. It could have been me. I thought to myself. If not Peter, then me.
